DOSTANA: Male bonding and female attraction

For Priyanka Chopra it indeed would be a rare occasion where within a fortnight she would be playing a role in the yet to be released film DOSTANA which would be an extension of a role that she played in a previous film i.e. FASHION. In FASHION she had played the role of a fashion model while in DOSTANA she is playing the role of an editor of the fashion magazine Verve who would be running a surgical knife through the fashion industry with her pen as a veritable toll. It would however be interesting to watch whether Priyanka's pen would approach the Indian fashion industry or the American fashion industry, as the location of DOSTANA is in Miami.

For Priyanka Chopra another striking parallel would be that she would be vying for interest between two male co-stars John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan, and this has a strong parallel with her erstwhile film MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, where she was the point of attraction and competition between Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan. It would also be probably for the first time that the female protagonist would be seen sipping wine with panache in conformity with the role of editor that Priyanka is playing.

Karan Johar would be indeed a satisfied man that the debate that he had started in a subtle manner about male bonding between two friends in the modern times being perceived with an element of suspicion and being put under the glass as being founded on homosexual aspirations in KAL HO NA HO, is going to have another introspection through DOSTANA.

It indeed is surprising that the male bonding between stars is seen with an element of suspicion and viewed from the reference point of homosexuality in the modern times. Films on male bonding have been a staple diet of the Hindi films for quite a long time, or one could say that from the time the journey of Hindi films started it had been there. An earlier film of the same name produced by Yash Johar had dwelt on the theme of friendship in a totally different manner and Karan Johar could make this concept stand on its head with his DOSTANA, but with subtle underpinnings of sleek comedy.

Pair of John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan had created a new frontier of the Indian cinema with DHOOM, and DOSTANA would be giving it an altogether a new dimension as the spark and chemistry between both of them in DHOOM even though they were at logger heads had made DHOOM a cult film.

It seems that the time for male bonding to claim its space on the silver screen has arrived, and could it start an era where a female actor is not needed thenceforth for a film?
