DOSTANA: Sometimes timings do matter

DOSTANA would be one of the rare films, which is releasing at a time in the country, when the country is vexed with the contentious issue of providing legal sanctity to homosexuality. The rarity is on account of the timing of the film as a momentum is already gathering around in the country to accord the legal status to homosexuality, and DOSTANA could provide the impetus to this move.

For this sheer reason Karan Johar would be pleased with the timing as he has a captive audience which is clamoring for according legal status to homosexuality and would like to search for points of connects with the film, and if the points of connect gel in a big way, then they could really emerge as the publicists for the cause of DOSTANA.

While the issue of homosexuality has been dealt with in a sensitive manner by the off-beat directors like Onir, who explored this theme in a sensitive manner in the film MY BROTHER NIKHIL released in 2005, the issue is being addressed in a detailed manner in the commercial cinema for the first time through DOSTANA, and is one of the numerous firsts that has been the hallmark of films made by Karan Johar.

The innovativeness of DOSTANA lies in the fact that two mainstream actors in the form of Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham have agreed to address an issue, which everybody wants to brush under the carpet, and riding on the bandwagon of humour would be able to reposition it in the agenda of the nation. In the previous attempts the issues of homosexuality have been addressed through choosing the character actors, or lesser stars, and if mainstream actors have been associated with it, it has had more of a lewd connotation associated with it.

Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham have had a not so successful release in the past, and if they were able to let the sparks fly in DOSTANA with their humour then it would be a good omen for both of them. Abhishek Bachchan has been blessed with a rare sense of comedy, which has been exploited with panache in DOSTANA, and this could be the turning point for him in his career. DOSTANA could also provide the filmmakers to try out this pair in subsequent films as well.
