DOSTANA has been able to contextualize the notion of homosexuality on to a central stage and in doing this has tried to dissociate the element of comic relief associated with portrayal of homosexuality in the Hindi films. DOSTANA being a major effort in this direction, it would indeed be instructive to trace out the journey of homosexual portrayal through Hindi films.

NAYA DIN NAYEE RAAT : In this film of Sanjeev Kumar where he portrayed the nav rasas of the theatrics one of the characters portrayed was that of a homosexual, who was referred to in a derogatory manner by another of the characters of Sanjeev Kumar (in the role of a Police Inspector) and who used to call this character " Chakka", and this was probably how the word entered into popular lexicon.
